How to tune

  1. 1Pick the instrument and the tuning. Standard guitar tuning is E A D G B E, from the thickest string to the thinnest.
  2. 2Turn on the microphone and keep the instrument close to your phone or computer, somewhere quiet.
  3. 3Play one open string at a time and let the sound settle. The tuner recognizes which string it is.
  4. 4If it says “Flat”, tighten the peg slowly; if it says “Sharp”, loosen it. Stop when the needle sits in the middle and it says “In tune”.
  5. 5Repeat for every string, then check the first one again: tightening one string pulls slightly on the others.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tuner work on a phone?

It works in your phone's or computer's browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge). The first time, the browser asks to use the microphone.

Is the microphone's sound recorded or sent anywhere?

No. The sound is analyzed on your own device, in real time, and nothing is recorded or sent to any server.

What does A4 = 440 Hz mean?

It is the tuning's reference note: A4 vibrating 440 times per second, the standard used worldwide. If you play along with a fixed instrument tuned differently (432 or 442, for instance), change the reference to match.

Can I tune without a microphone?

Yes. Tap a string on the screen to hear its note and adjust your instrument's string until both sound the same, without the wobble between them.

What's the difference between Strings and Chromatic mode?

In Strings mode the tuner knows the notes of the chosen tuning and shows how far you are from the nearest string. In Chromatic mode it shows any note it hears — handy for other tunings or other instruments.
